unbiased opinion. Dave is a
publicist, music journalist, published author and bass

Portsmouth, but he can't help that. Down south in Africa

Final
Fiction - Parting of The ways
Originally
formed in the Czech Republic in 2004, Final
Fiction is a four-piece rock band consisting of
Freya, Synapse5 and Dworis and Vojta.
Their debut release was the 2006 EP The Mirror, with a
new EP following on in 2008 entitled From The Fairy. In
the 4 years of their existence, Final Fiction has grown
from strength to strength with local Czech press hailing
them as THE discovery of the current Czech rock scene.
David Says:
Mesmerising
vocals soar over a rock steady bed of driving guitar,
soaring keyboards and a powerhouse rhythm section. The
unique vocal tone makes Final Fiction more than just
another well-produced rock band and therefore something
to look out for.

A normal day in the The crazy, dark ,
enigmatic and rock fuelled world of Hi Spider
above
Hi Spider -
Witchety Wood
Hi Spider is a
two piece based in London, consisting of two
South Africans, Witch Boy Bat Black. A pretty new
outfit, their sound is eclectic and raw. They
incorporate plenty of changeable rhythm with jangly
guitars and choppy vocal melodies. With strong pop
melodies cutting across a powerful rhythm section, Hi
Spider have created and effective melange.
David Says:
Fans of The Wild
Eyes are going to be pleased to see Nikhil back in
action. Hi Spider is eclectic, unexpected and ear
pleasing. Look out for more.

Toy Horses - But What About The
Future
This outfit was
formed in 2007 when singer/songwriters Tom and Adam
joined forces to create music together. It’s mainly
acoustic, with an indie tinge, driven by melody and
harmony with a strong emphasis on the lyrical content.
They’ve been getting pretty good airplay in their
indigenous England, featuring on BBC 1, BBC radio Six
Music, XFM London, BBC Radio Wales, BBC Radio Cymru.
David Says:
Infectiously
poppy, but with a brain. This tune demands a good few
re0listens and you grasp after the numerous one-liners
and clever lyrics. Love it.

this British 4-piece consists of Joseph Evans, Huw
Richards, Mike Tucker and Rob Steele. They cite their

Killers, The Beatles, Bob Dylan and The Police. The
strong pop undertones to their songs create a strong
basis for the heavy yet dancey guitar riffs.
David Says:
Very likeable,
very accessible without being candy floss. The Grand
Parade has managed to create a unique sound within the
indie obsessed landscape they exist in. Nice work.
Matchbox Radio 24
says " One of the best new British Indie bands to
emerge in years with a poetic slice of angst not heard
since Richey was in the Manics, tuneful and decadent"

Gumshen – Helmet
Gumshen began
life as the quartet Menthol James in
Seattle USA. Now a trio, they have enlisted
production help from Seattle Art Institute audio
instructor Rich Hinklin, formerly of Reciprocal
Recording and released an EP Stew. The band has been
developing a strong following along with critical
acclaim. Gumshen is comprised of guitarist Jan Ciganik
(formerly of the John Cale produced band Ventilator),
drummer Dennis McCoy (original Gumshen) and

David says:
Well produced Seattle rock, easily recognisable for its
roots. Gumshen are tight and together and seem set to
catch the commercial ear.

on bass guitar, Owen on guitar and backing vocals and
Jethro on drums and backing vocals. The band is based
around the partnerships of Dirk former
guitarist/band-mate Owen. Their first catchy and upbeat
track “Too Far” was recorded and produced by Dirk in The
Does own studio room. It was an instant hit with local
radio DJ's and entered the Top 10 radio charts straight
away.
David Says:
Catchy indie pop
with a great vocal line and driving groovy rhythm
section. Once this head has invaded your consciousness,
it’s pretty hard to get rid of it!

Rease - More than I can hide
Rease is a 4
piece rock band from Lucerne, Switzerland consisting of
Andy Iten on Vocals, Guitars, Michael de Mont on
Guitars, Turi Lopez on Bass and Sandro Cadeddu on the
Drums. Their sound combines groovy guitar riffs and
catchy melodies with rocking feeling and expression.
Their songs range from smooth acoustic to pop tunes as
well as good old head-banging rock n roll.
David Says:
Accomplished and
smooth, Rease may stray into the predictable side of
soft rock with this one. But good vocals and a very
solid rhythm section underpin a purposeful sound.

The incredible Chris Braid above
Chris Braid -
Beautiful Mind
Chris Braid began playing the
guitar in his mid-teens and took it further when he
started a band called Trace with his friend Chris Norman
in 2001. The band never got too far, so Chris went solo
and recorded and album with producer
Danny Burton.
This track was recorded with the line up of
Chris Braid
on vocals, Ben
Smith on rhythm and lead Guitar,
Tom Smith
on bass guitar,
Sam Smith on drums and
Jonas Jalhay on rhythm and lead guitar.
David says:
While Chris
prides himself on his glam rock roots and influences,
this song is an introspective ballade that has a
haunting melody and an ethereal sonic bed. Persuasive.
Maybe give up the glam Chris, this sound is great.

Above: Eltons Adams, Canada's most
exciting and fresh new rock artist who also happens to
have served his time in the army in Afghanistan. Watch
out James Blunt you are about to be out ranked.
Elton Adams -
Shut up
Elton Adams was
born and raised in Roddickton,
Newfoundland. At the age of
seventeen he enrolled in the Canadian Forces where he
started to write his own music. He has spent plenty of
time playing for the Canadian troops with various bands
and his debut album is due out soon.
David Says:
Shut Up is a
stripped-down guitar track that relies effectively on
its sparseness for its punch. A sung-shouted vocal line
drops perfectly around the simple chord progression to
create a powerful simple song.

The Connoisseurs
- Nitty Gritty
Following a long
and twisted history, The Connoisseurs are, at their
core, song-writer Sean Miler and vocalist Danny

the material you will hear in
Perth,
Australia with
producer Lee Bradshaw. Their sound is based on Brit pop
sensibilities, driven by melody and structure and
reaching for amore sophisticated sound in pop.
David Says:
This is pretty
cracking stuff. Intelligent pop is a rarity at the best
of times, and The Connoisseurs are by default then, a
rare band.

Stephen Pearlman who has been crafting synth-pop since
1994. He is heavily influenced by Erasure and Björk, and

stuff.

The poptastic, energetic and exciting
Cherie Morgan above.
Cherie Morgan –
Mistakes
Cherie Morgan
has been singing since she was 8 years old, and is
developing a repertoire of material to launch her
career. With one album ‘Forever Young’ already out and
part of an Artist Development Programme in
London
with Major Music she is working hard to realise her
dream.

Sassy,
saccharine sweet and very very poppy, Cherie Morgan is
aiming squarely at the young female urban market, and
she’ll not doubt hit it too.

Trance like
electronic vibes, sustained over a bed of flowing synths.
You won’t mistake this for pop, definitely ambient music
for those recovering. It’s technical, soothing and very,
very well done.

The true artist and solo troubadour James Vaughan above.
( Isn't he also now the big voice of Matchbox Radio
24, you know the guy who says "One nation, One
station"....wow cool a man of many talents - Ed ).
John Vaughan -
Tokyo Hotel blues
John Vaughan is
a singer songwriter in the classic mid-70’s tradition.
Based in Berlin, Germany Vaughan
is a military brat who lived in
Heidelberg, Germany in the late sixties and stayed behind to
live in
Germany! Hi focus is on
narrative and lyrics, making for lyrical, melody driven
material with real substance.
David Says:
This sedate but
powerful song sucks you in. Maybe its John’s vocal tone,
maybe it is just the seductive chorus and fretless bass,
but it’s a memorable song.
Matchbox Radio 24 says" A
haunting mix of classic influences, distinctive and
powerful vocals and worldly percussion under a solid
wall of songwriting genius, this tells a real story".

Rich Snyder -
Forgive Us Darfur
Dale Olivier
says"
Richy
Snyder is a singer songwriter from
the U.S.A who has produced in our opinion one of the
best songs ever written. "Forgive us Darfur"
is an amazing, soothing, touching
and spine tingling jazz tinged ballad with a conscience.
The beautiful tear inducing piano is reminiscent of
Billy Joel's early moments and the incredible melody is
filled with melancholy, but brings a feeling a renewal
and hope to the listener. This is a touching, profound
song with lyrics that make you think and think again.
Perfect !.

Rob Forster - On my mind
Rob
Forster is a new singer/songwriter, originating out of
the Manchester music scene for whom 2009 promises
big things. Previously fronting and leading a number of
respected bands in the area, Rob spent the last years
honing his craft in Europe
and the States and now brings a world wizened
authenticity to his craft. The style and sound, combine
contemporary story telling and commentary on the world
with an insistence on and love of genuine melody and
musicality. His eyes see a world painted in its many
shades of grey, and the human spirit in light of all its
flaws and greatness. Lyrically
every word is considered and placed with meaning and
purpose. This is a soul exposed. 2009 sees his eagerly
awaited first full production, full length release
‘Frozen’. The track On My Mind wets the appetite for
this and gives an great preview of what is surely to
come, exemplifying the integrity and depth in this new
artists work.
Dale Olivier says" Robert Forster delivers a
slow, dreamy and melodic melancholy masterpiece with
beautiful epic Jeff Buckley esque guitars and open and
honest lyrics. Rob sings about how he loves his partner
but is really thinking about "Sarah". A lovely song that
takes you on a relaxing, dreamy journey and then twists
lyrically to reveal a darker, sensitive and yearning
nature. A love song of different and great
proportions...nice.

Jade - Follow me
down
Jade is an Italian duo of
Gianluca Ghersetti and Riccardo Piemonte that melds
gentle acoustic guitar songs with some mean programming
and ethereal moods. Stylistically hard to pigeonhole,
Jade are an eclectic outfit, writing beautiful, melodic
music.
David Says:
This stuff is
very hypnotic. The two guys have created a sonic-scape
that slurps you up and keeps you hooked. Hard to put
your finger on why this happens, but the combination of
acoustic and electronic elements defiantly playa bog
role.

Jointpop - Monday morning love situation
Jointpop
was formed in 1996 in Trinidad and Tobago
and currently includes singer/songwriter
Gary Hector (Guitar-Vocal) and
Damon
Homer (Guitar) Dion Camacho (Drums) Phil
Hill (Keyboards) Jerome Girdharrie (Bass). As the name
suggests they draw on a wide range of influences which
they meld into one. These include
Clash style rants to
Velvet-like laid back grooves and
Dylanesque lyrics.
David Says:
A really old-school rock n roll style that is revived
with vigour here. It’s a catchy song with all the
old-school values in place. Pretty damn cool!

The Lost Heights
- Come back to me
The Lost Heights are a five piece from England, consisting of Adele, Lewis,
Pearce, jack and Dave. Formerly known as simply Adele,
the band is fronted by the powerful vocals of the
aforementioned young woman and present powerful blend of
ballade fuelled pop.
David Says:
This is a direct
kind of pop music, with soaring chorus and rhythmic
verses. Adele’s voice certainly catches the ear from the
first note, and her band is no slouch either!

2:

The bouncy, sing-along but rocking
band The Dancing Bullets shooting to NO
1 above.
The Dancing
Bullets - Violet row
A straight up old school rock n roll
band from the UK, the Dancing Bullets consist of members
Gary Price on vocals
and guitar, Roy Price on vocals and Bass and Anthony
Jones on drums. They claim to be influenced by the likes
of Buddy Holly and the Crickets, Louis Jordan, The
Everly Borthers and The Ramones. Oddly enough, not only
can you hear this, but it sounds great and most
certainly their own at the same time.
David Says:
Its not often you find a band that
wears its influences so much on their sleeve and still
manage to pull off not sounding hackneyed of cheap. The
Dancing Bullets are a good band and Violet row is a
cracking, catchy song in the way that a lot of rock n
roll was before the cynicism set in.

Croatia's hottest modern rock export ROCK BUS above.
Rock bus - On a rock bus
The hot new Croatian band Rock Bus formed in the summer of 2005 when two teenagers Korado ( Drums ) and Miki ( Guitar ) decided to form a band. The funny thing was that the band was formed before they could all play their instruments. Very soon after Alex joined them as bass player and the show began. After a few years and a lot of punk rock riffs the band moved into a more serious garage-rock phase which lead to the final line up of Rock Bus when Robi joined the band as rhythm guitarist. The band now consists of Miki (vocals/guitar), Korado (drums), Alex (bass/back vox) and Robi (rhythm guitar) and the group thrive on good rock ‘n’ roll fun and this can be heard in their sound.
David Says:
These guys are having fun and you can tell that by listening to their explosive and powerful but fun blend of ACDC meets Gun's n' Roses rock. Definately the hottest rock export from Croatia , we predict big things and can't seem to get this song out of our head.....excellent !.

it contains 5 more melodious and electronic songs than
the ones found on the first album.
David says:
A wild mix of
really heavy rock with Gothic overtones and some nice
electronic elements. Knife produce an epic heavy sound
that will pin your ears to your head.

Tantric Templars
Going After Zen
or GAZ to give it its abbreviated name is the solo
pseudonym of Chris Hirons who has a fondness for the
crafting of looped grooved progressively psychedelic
mantras at a home based studio in the heart of England.

hypnotic and pretty damn cool actually!

From the

Liverpool
and consisting of Chris Mckeown, David Tyrrell and John
Mulholland, David Tyrell is both a band and a person.
With a debut EP released in 2008, the band made a
dynamic entrance onto their native
Liverpool

band combines David's powerful lyrics with blazing drum
tracks and bouncing bass lines to fabricate yet another
disc full of pulse-pounding scorchers. With standout
tracks like "Believe" and "For You" look for David
Tyrrell to be a major part in the music landscape for
years to come.

A gentle piano driven ballade that
has haunting lyrics and real power. You can see why
these guys fancy their chances!

dreamy singer songwriter Darren

Darren Ramshaw –
Fakers
Daren hails from
Ashby De La Zouch in the Midlands of the
UK. He writes his won
material and sings, as well as playing guitar, mandolin,
violin, keyboards and harmonica. His sound is a lilting
Celtic folk sound, with a slightly spacey feel.
David says:
Darren will soon
be working with a percussionist as well, and I’d like to
hear how his songs change. As acoustic folk, this song
is excellent, but he clearly can take it further.

The distinctive heartfelt but rock troubadour
Matt Charlton above.
Matt Charlton -
Despre tu
Don’t be fooled by the song titles, Matt hails from England. Although is range of
influences is big: anything from Van Morrison to the Wu
Tang Clan, Pentangle to Pantera to Marlena Shaw to
Metallica to Tool.
David Says:
Intense and
heartfelt while remaining sparely driven by only the
acoustic guitar. Despre Tu is an intense song, and the
Eddie Vedder-esque vocals only add to the sense of
alienation.

The Woodlands - Forward

province
of Pesaro/Urbino, Italy in
September 2007. The current line up is 5 members:

creating an impressive range of their own material.
The Stilts play balls-out rock and roll with lashings of
punk and ska thrown in. Citing influences ranging from
The Clash and The Who through to Cage the Elephant and
The Paddington’s. Over the last year and a half they
have worked their way through quiet Monday night gigs to
packed weekenders in top venues, delighting promoters
and picking up fans on the way.
David Says:
One of the quieter tunes from eh Stilts’ repertoire,
proving that they are more than just out and out
rockers. A clever, held back number that shows they can
write songs as well as they rock.

guys know their stuff!

Inertia Avenue - Live Forever
This outfit
started out as a solo home studio project by founding
member and principal writer Hammy. It basically strove

Formed in 1998, they have done well on their local
circuit, now looking to break out onto bigger things.

guys an interesting sound. Given some more time to
experiment in the studio I reckon they could be HUGE!

Pearce an Australian singer/songwriter/lead guitar and
Victoria Holmes, who is English and does the percussion
percussion/backing vocals and piano bits. They met
randomly and discovered a musical chemistry which has
resulted in all these songs.

so this duo who somehow cooks up a quirky, melodically
haunting brew that demands repeat listening.

Nathan J Lark above
Nathan Lark - Sorrows Edge
Nathan is the bassist for
Sacred Harts and Sorrow’s Edge is his first solo outing.
An instrumental, solo rock guitar showcase, that harks
back to the classics of the genre.
David Says:
Almost
Satriani-esque in its other worldly feel, this is an
intriguing instrumental track. No doubt guitar fiends
will go mad for it, but you’re not exactly going to hear
it on the Top 40 next week.

Switzerlands amazing Fakir above
Fakir – Emanation
Fakir hail from
Bern
in
Switzerland. A
four-piece, they describe themselves simply as Mr.
Fakir, Mr. Fender, Mr. Jazz Bass and Mr. Boss. Once you
get to the music you begin to see why. A minimalistic
sound of drifting sound as opposed to songs, Fakir are
playing with the idea of song based music, rather than
playing song based music
David Says:
Sound scapes and
dream music. It’s pretty dark and may well have come out
of something like the Bladrunner soundtrack. Must be
great for late night driving.
