The Whatmans are one of the best unsigned Indie rock bands based in Dublin. Their incredible Independent single " Devil Shoes" taken of the E.P of ther same name is out officially on the 21 September 2009 through Matchbox Recordings and distributed by Universal music operations.
The band consists of:
Lead Vocals - John Brennan
Lead Guitar/Backing Vocals- Padar Mulvey
Bass/ Backing Vocals - Franny McGinn
Drums- Aidan Carolan.
Hot Press magazine said "This Navan quintet formed in 2007, and although there cited influences are stock bands like the Stones,The Who and The Jam, they've got a modern, danceable edge that sounds like it owes as much to Bloc Party as anything else. Forthright vocals, blazing guitars and pounding drums-there's definitley a gap in the Irish market for this sort of accomplished indie-rock".
Music review unsigned said" "All the ingredients of Indie pop culture right to the bone".
THE
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
1. What made you decide to start a career in music , tell us a bit about your history to date ?
" I use to go and watch shit bands when I was younger, its amazing what becomes attractive to the ear after six cans of cider and half a bottle of whiskey, and from them shit bands I got two good things: the hunger to play music and the sound I wanted to play through, I knew I didn't want to sound like them bands. A few years later I met Aidan{ the drummer }, and Frany{ the bassist }, in a pub playing music, and one thing lead to another and we started 'The Whatmans'. Then I was having pints one night and John {singer} got up and sang a song. I couldn't believe he could sing, I got his number through mutual friends and he joined to complete the line up. Since then we've being going from strength to strength, selling out venues all over the place and receiving thousands of hits on our myspace....Let the good times roll"... Padar {guitarist}..
2. Who or what are your influences ?
Our influences range from bands like Oasis, The Stone Roses, The Beatles, The Stones, The Who and Kasabian, to every problem and decision encountered everyday, to every drink and smoke consumed every night...
3. What modern artists do you like ?
Kasabian, Oasis, Doves, The Enemy and a new band from Manchester called The Vortex.
4. If you could choose to record a song with any other artist/band alive or dead who would it be and why ?
Its very hard to answer this, theres just so many legends I'd love to sit in a studio with, but I think I'd choose Liam or Noel Gallagher, for two main reasons, Oasis were the first band I went to see and I came away on cloud 9 and it would be a good old session aferwards....probably during aswell...
5. What inspires you to write your music/lyrics ?
Everything and Anything. I like to right tunes that people can read the lyrics to and say " He makes a good point, even if he does talk alot of nonsense".
6. Name your all time fave track by another artist ?
There's no way in the world anyone can choose just 1song as their favourite I think. There is just too many classics to choose from. I'll name a few of my favourites: Forever Young by Bob Dylan, Knights in White Satin by The Moody Blues, Stairway to Heaven by Zepplin, Won't Get Fooled Again and The Seeker by The Who,and Fallin'Down and Probably All in the Mind by Oasis....I could name another 100 songs handy!!
7. What sort of sound can we expect from your forthcoming CD ?
Its Rock'n'Roll, its loud roaring guitar, its melody driven bass, its pounding drums, its powerful vocals...Its just Rock'n'Roll....
8. What are your ambitions for your music. Where do you see yourself in 5 years ?
At the minute we just want to get the tunes out there. In 5years we could all be on the dole or we could be doing this for a living, who knows??
9. How would you describe your music and what genre do you think it fits into ?
I always find it hard to describe our music and to label it. Its Indie Rock'n'Roll; its the influences of the sixties and nineties rolled into one.....and its Rockin'!
10. Where is your forthcoming album being recorded and who is producing ?
We'll be recording the album I would think in Dublin's Elektra Studios. Alexis Morand will hopefully be producing it, that is if he can bare to be stuck in the studio for a few weeks with us.
11. In the U.K music and food has combined with celebrity rock and pop stars now appearing and cooking on TV food shows. Please can you give us your favourite recipe ?
I dont really cook to well, but I do make a top notch Full Irish, cures the heaviest of hangovers.
SPOTLIGHT
ON
recently had the pleasure of meeting up with the
exciting new Irish Indie rock band The Whatmans. The full interview can be seen
below.
The brilliant, anthemic and uplifting "Devil Shoes" will be
released officially on 21September
2009.
The Whatmans are not just your ordinary Indie rock band. They deliver a very strong blend of melodic but powerful and anthemic Indie rock with a classic but completely up to date feel. They are seriously good songwriters with a powerful distinctive lead vocalist who sounds glorious over the powerful rhythm section and exceptional guitar playing.....destined for big things"-Matchbox
