SEAN DEEGAN

NEW SINGLE " WAS I WRONG NOW ?" OUT ON 8 SEP 2008

The inspirational singer songwriter Sean Deegan returns from a sabbatical with an incredible upbeat 60's esq single called " Was I wrong now ?". The single marks a departure from his previous more acoustic material and features an upbeat, rich, poppy, catchy, melodic and retro sound with the best guitar solo we have heard in years. The single also features an amazing new ballad called " Do you fear the darkness" with some incredibly haunting guest vocals from Sean's partner Sharon Deegan. The CD also contains a bonus track in the form of a brave and bold cover version of the John Lennon classic " Imagine". The video can be seen below.

The single is available through the normal online and physical distributors from 8 Sept 2008 but will also be available for FREE with any copy of Sean's debut album " The Roads you take".

BRAND NEW INTERVIEW WITH SEAN DEEGAN

We spoke to Sean about the new single  and the results can be seen below.

1. Your new single is a lot more upbeat than your previous releases what sort of mood were you in when you wrote this and what's the song about ?

“Was I wrong now?” has been released as a single due to popular demand from our teenage son’s mates. They all love the air guitar and fell in love with it when they were round chilling out with him, the vibes just carried on up the stairs and they loved it. They have even created a fan page on Bebo (http://www.bebo.com/deeganmusic) demanding its release!! We also thought it would make a nice change to the more reflective songs on the album and give all fans of ‘air guitar’ a chance to have a good old wig out with their tennis rackets!

The song is a sort of ‘one in the eye’ for the people who spend their time trying to put you down and kill your dreams, it’s kind of saying despite that, you CAN have your cake (or scone!) and eat it, hence the idea behind the artwork.

2. We love the 60's esq solo on your new single what effects are you using ?

Just good old reverb cranked up and some compression to keep the whole sound tight… I didn’t want to go too overboard with the effects as it is supposed to be a 60’s ish sound and really this would have been about all that was available back then…. Think it came out really well and sounds cool !

3. The production is sounding great. Do you think it's better as an artist producing and recording everything yourself as opposed to going into a studio. ?

I like to record everything and produce everything in the comfort of my own four walls, I find it can be a little daunting to go into a bigger studio, I like the intimacy of working in a smaller space, plus it’s nearer to the kettle.. It’s just a case of finding something that your comfortable with I guess…. That’s not to say that I couldn’t be comfortable at Abbey Road too I guess and of course if George Martin is looking for a little project to tempt him out of his retirement (hint hint !!)

4. “Do you fear the darkness?” is a lot darker (excuse the pun!!) than track one, what’s that all about then ? (You can come out from under the desk now- ED )

Well apart from showcasing the diversity of our music, this song was written by Sharon and this is a great opportunity to bring her into the spotlight. (She’s been kept in the Dark for too long! Get it??) Well actually she was quietly writing some poetry one night and I hopped on the lyrics and just had to write some music to accompany them. Yes this is a completely different style to track 1, haunting in a comforting way it seems to be begging for a slot in a film score. The lyrics explain the song I think, it probes the listener and reflects well the good and bad places that the mind can wander to.

5. You have decided to do a cover of John Lennon's Imagine ( Which we think sounds wonderful - ED ) as a B side. Apart from being a fan what were the reasons for this it's a pretty brave choice of cover ?

I have always been a big fan of JL and the message of his and Yoko’s work. It seems almost obscene that the simple message in this inspired song is still overlooked today. Despite all the desire in the 60’s & 70’s to spread the word that maybe “peace” should be “given a chance”, or that “war is over if you want it” or the idea that the world can “live as one” has been forgotten by many and that the business of invasions, killing, wars, famine and terrorism continues perhaps even more so now than ever. I believe it is a really poignant time in history where the simple message that there is perhaps another way to resolve problems has been too easily forgotten, or as JL put it, “you may say I’m a dreamer” !
I know this is a massive song to cover, but I have tried to do a sensitive job, humbly doing it my way and not trying to replicate the original exactly. I am pleased how it came out, and the video that accompanies it reinforces the message of the song in a more contemporary way.

6. These days food and music seem to have combined with pop stars appearing on cooking shows. Can you give us your favourite recipe ?

My favourite recipe, well it has to be one of two, either fish finger surprise sandwiches or perhaps beef burger surprise sandwiches! There’s not a lot to choose between them, except one is made with fish fingers and the other with beef burgers. The surprise is that there isn’t one !

7. What are you listening to at the moment ?

I’ve been listening to the new album by Coldplay which reminds me a bit of Pink Floyd at times, this has spurred me to dig out my old Pink Floyd albums, which has then lead onto digging through the old LP collection and my antique Stranglers and Clash stuff… a bit of everything really ! And of course Matchbox Radio 24…..

8. We have heard rumours that following in the footsteps of Coldplay you have decided to give away your new single free with every copy of your debut album. Is this true ?

Yes we can exclusively confirm that all customers who order a copy of the debut album through Matchbox will get the single free !! Yes that’s right absolutely free !! (You heard it here first, “Poptastic” as Mr. Blackburn might say). It’s hard times for everyone at the moment, credit crunch and all that, we thought it would be nice for people to get more than they pay for, for a change !!

SOME BRIEF HISTORY

Music has always been a part of Sean Deegan's life, although born in the UK his parents originated from Ireland and so growing up in an Irish family automatically gave him qualifications in providing entertainment at family gatherings, as well as joining in with countless renditions of Irish Folk  Music.

At 13 and using some money he was given for his birthday he purchased his first album - Gilbert O’ Sullivan’s Greatest Hits.  At 15 he went to work in a fruit shop at the weekends and started to use his "income" to really get his music collection going, starting with The Beatles singles and moving on to their albums. He claimed an old guitar that his mum had bought at a jumble sale for 50p which was lying around the house and got himself a Beatles song book. He kept practicing the chords and discovered with joy the excitement of playing music. His musical journey had begun.

Drawing from the magical sounds and inspirational characters that the late 60’s and early 70’s were blessed with such as Bob Dylan, Lennon & McCartney & Simon & Garfunkel, Sean started to create his own songs.

Creating and performing music either independently or as part of a band has continued over the years, and more recently his enthusiasm to become an established songwriter has been re-ignited.

In his own words " The hands of time have provided me with valuable experience which has allowed me to grow and develop, building songs that are inspired by the classic songwriters of the past and blending them with heartfelt lyrics taken from the experience of living in today’s world. Acoustically led songs built from the solid foundation of classic pop song structure".
