1. What made you decide to form Money Train tell us a bit
about your history to date ?
We were 2 solo artists who were both buzzing in their perspective
markets. Coincidently, we have two completely different styles and takes
on music, but our differences help us to reach different people. One
collaboration turned into several which evolved into a partnership. We
meshed well and We haven't looked back since
2. Who or what are your influences ?
We are influenced by the people and the struggle. Being in the
position to help others prosper is the driving force behind MONEY TRAIN.
Artists like Wyclef Jean, Jay-Z, David Banner and Kanye West have all
used their position to help out the less fortunate. To give a voice or
speak up for those not spoken for. Those type of artists have a heavy
influence on MONEY TRAIN
3. What modern artists do you like ?
We like Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z, Kanye, Eminem, Timbaland, Outkast,
50 Cent, Young Jeezy, T.I., Lupe Fiasco, Gym Class Heroes.
4. Where did the name come from ?
The name Money Train is a metaphor. It stands for get money and keep
it moving. By the time we make a million dollars we'll be trying to
figure out how to make 2 million. By the time we sell 5 million CD's
we'll be trying to figure out how to sell 10 Million. Get Money and keep
moving!!
5. What inspires you to write your music/lyrics ?
We write music based on what's going on in our life at that specific
time. One month we might write a bunch of party songs because we feel
like having a good time. But the next month we might feel like talking
about world issues. Making music is like writing a book, meaning each
song is a representation of that particular time period. No author ever
wrote the same book twice. As an artist, you evolve, and hopefully the
music, song content, and concepts will too.
6. Name your all time fave track by another band/artist ?
1. I ain't mad at cha - Tupac
2. Song Cry - Jay Z
3. Can't Tell Me Nothing - Kanye West
4. God Gave Me Style - 50 Cent
5. Purple Rain - Prince
6. Da Art of Storytelling - Outkast
7. What sort of sound can we expect from your forthcoming
album ?
In short, you can expect banging beats, catchy hooks and out of this
world lyrics all throughout this album.
8. What are your ambitions for your music. Where do you see
yourself in 5 years ?
Musically, our goal is to make timeless music and deliver a classic
album that people will never forget. From Albums like: Micheal Jackson's
"Thriller" to Prince's "Purple Rain" to Nas' Illmatic to Eminem's
Marshall Mather LP. Those albums will always be remembered because they
touched the hearts of so many people. Before It's all over Money Train
will have one of those unforgettable albums. As far as business, we are
both entrepreneurs so we plan on continuing to make good music and using
that influence to attack the corporate world. In 5 years, it would be
nice to own a couple of businesses, rather it be real-estate, film,
clothes, or charity foundations. Like the name implies... Get money And
keep moving.
9. How would you describe your music and what genre do you
think it fits into ?
Up-tempo feel-good music. The genre would have to be hip-hop/pop
10. Where was your new material recorded and who was
producing ?
The new material was recorded entirely at ILLA TEAM Studios, located
in Suffolk, UK, which is run by group member Caligrafi
The Production was a collage of different musicians hand-picked by
group member Reese the Ruler
11. You guys are originally from the USA but decided to come
to the U.K to do your music ? What was the thinking behind this and in
your opinion, do you think it makes it easier or harder to make it as a
band based in the U.K coming from the States ?
The biggest factor that brought us to the UK to do music was the
diversity. The UK welcomes diversity whereas, the states most often
opposes something that's unfamiliar. Audiences in the states accept
people based on who's consigning them. For example, 50 cent co-signs
G-Unit, Eminem co-signs D12, Ludacris co-signs DTP, Nelly co-signs the
St. Lunatics, T.I. co-signs PSC, and list goes on. Either way you look
at it, breaking into the music business is hard work. Each place has its
benefits and set-backs. In the states the market is very saturated
because everyone either knows someone who does music or does music
themselves. The upside is that the market is so much larger to get your
music out there to be heard. For example it's easier to perform in
venues, open up for big name artist, and get your music on the radio. In
the UK getting radio play, or performing at big events is usually
limited to artist who are already signed. We've even felt resistance
about getting our song in rotation in the club whereas getting your
music played in the club in the states isn't all that difficult. It's a
catch 22. But at the end of the day, the UK scene definitely complements
the kind of music that we do.
12. Who are the members of Money Train and what do they all
do and play ?
Caligrafi Jones: Rapper/Vocalist...Known to most as simply Cali, he
is the more technical half of MONEY TRAIN. Engineering most of the
groups studio sessions. More of a metaphorical storyteller than a
commercial rapper, Cali is the eccentric one of the two
Reese the Ruler: Rapper....Known as Reese or Gooch, he is the
charismatic people person of MONEY TRAIN. He is the in your face, tell
it like it is type of rapper, with extraordinary wit and jaw-jabbing
punchlines. Reese has an ear for what the masses want to hear and
delivers by carefully selecting the groups instrumentation.
13. In the U.K music and food has combined with celebrity
rock and pop stars now appearing and cooking on TV food shows. Please
can you give us your favourite recipe ?
Caligrafi: My favorite dish to cook is eggplant parmasean. You cut
it, fry it, smother it with special tomato sauce, add cheese and bake
it. Only the special ladies get to taste my specialty dish. ( mmmm
If I try that and my luck with the ladies may get better ?? - ED )
.
Reese: My favorite dish to cook is catfish. Either deep fried coated
with cornmeal or marinated with lemon juice and baked. If I'm showing
off I might add some creole seasoning with dash of Worcestershire sauce.
It's quick and easy!!
14. On a previous release you guys sampled The Eurythmics
track "Sweet Dreams". Are you big fans of 80's electro pop or was it
just that song In particular you liked ?
We both love 80's as we are both 80's babies. Both of us are huge
Prince fans and a lot of our concepts and song structures are based on
the Purple Rain/Electro Pop era in music.
