THE
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
1. What made you decide to pursue a career in music. Tell us a bit about the IMIND history to
date ?
Well, my story starts when I was a teenager and used to see my cousins rehearsing in their house every time we went to their place for vacations. One of my cousins was playing the bass and the other the drums, they both played very good and I kind of liked it, so I decided that i wanted to become a drummer my self because I was always making drum sounds with my mouth (a bit like a beat box), so I asked my mother if it would be possible for me to get a drum-kit to what she responded: “Sure!”. But then something very peculiar happened, it seemed like destiny had other plans for me as a musician, because at the age of 14 I had the “brilliant’” idea of “borrowing” my mothers car to have a wild night driving around (I was not allowed to drive because I was too young) and well, the car ended up over a broken tree, big accident, and the car completely destroyed!, but I was completely fine, not even a scratch. I think you can imagine my mother’s reaction, because next time we talked about my drum-kit the answer was: “No way!”
So for sometime I was kind of lost in the music path, but later on when I was 16 some friends asked me if I wanted to play the bass in a band because they were playing guitars and needed a bass man as soon as possible, so I was quite enthusiast about it, but I still had to get a bass, and then I thought about my cousins old bass and I asked them about that old bass they had, so they told me: “…you can use it until you get your own”.
So, that’s the way I started to play bass, I got some lessons for few months and sometime later we made our first band and once again because no one felt like singing I kind of tried and then the guys just said: “you have a nice voice, you should be the singer” , so I became the singer and bass man of the band and in that way I started to have fun playing instruments, I was learning acoustic guitar afterwards, then electric guitar, etc and I always liked to write poetry so I found the way to combine my writing skills with my music skills and I felt good doing so, It became a sort of a challenge for me to become good in both aspects, to express my self, my feelings and my thoughts through new ways and share it with the people.
2. Who or what are your influences ?
I like bands like: ‘Queen’, ‘The Beatles’, ‘The Police’, ‘Soda Stereo’, ‘Sentimiento Muerto’, ‘Billy Idol’, ’Carlos Santana’, ‘The Clash’, ’Charly Garcia’, ‘The Cure’, ‘Rolling Stones’, ’Fito Paez’, ‘The Doors’, ‘Jimi Hendrix’, ‘Nirvana’, ‘Sound Garden’, ‘Rage against the machine’, ‘Pearl Jam’, ‘Lenny Kravitz’, ‘Richie Valens’, ‘INXS’, ‘Led Zeppeling’, ‘U2’,’Ret Hot Chili Peppers’, ‘Francis Cabrel’, ‘Richard Marx’,’Jamiroquai’, ’Madonna’, ’Juanes’, ‘Ricardo Arjona’, ’Pink Floyd’, ‘Aditus’, ‘R.E.M.’, ‘Desorden Público’, ’Manu Chao’, ’Jewel’, ‘The Peche Mode’, ‘Mobby’ and many more bands and artists. I mean even if my music doesn’t sound like the most of these bands, the influence of some of them is here or there, almost invisible but still somewhere inside my work.
3. What modern artists do you like ?
I like many modern bands and singers, but one of my favorite singers is ‘Jewel’ ‘cause she is really like an angel singing, I find her amazing, her voice really makes me vibrate. Actually one of my dreams as a singer is to share the stage with her one day. Bands like ‘Red Hot Chili Peppers’, ’Jamiroquai’, ‘Rage against the Machine’ have so much rhythm and feeling that I can not stop dancing and singers like ‘Gustavo Ceratti’ and ‘Juanes’ because of the sound of their guitars and charisma.
4. Where did the band name come from ?
The band’s name has several meanings and one of them is explained because of the sound of the word ‘I’ and ‘eye’ in English which basically have the same kind of sound, so in that context the name means: ‘The Eye of the Mind’ which according to many eastern spiritual traditions represents the inner eye or the third eye. That’s why there is an eye on the top of the “I” in the logo.
Another meaning of the name comes from the relationship between mind and body, these two somehow seem to be completely aliens to each other just because of the fact that the mind never dies and the body does, so the one is eternal and the other is just temporary.
I – MIND also represents my deepest feelings of concern and preoccupation for the situation of the world nowadays, war, sadness, desperation, poverty, etc, which are the result of the world’s chaos.
5. What inspires you to write your music/lyrics ?
Life is the best inspiration I get, things and situations that happen to me or to others, feelings and thoughts that I need to express come very often in the form of lyrics, but sometimes music comes first, it is very strange, I can not control that but certainly the one always creates the chance for the other.
Sometimes while asleep I suddenly get some lyrics swimming inside my head, some other times music and then I have to stand up, drink a coffee and sit down to work on it, no matter how late it is, it just has to come out of my head. Some other times I can get inspired just by hearing the new chords that my youngest brother is using to make his own song like in the case of my song ‘Sensitive’ which basically contains few chords of my little brother Daniel’s song.
6. Name your all time fave track by another band/artist ?
My favorite song ever is ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ from Queen because of the originality of the song it self, the voice of Freddy Mercury and the other members playing in such a harmony in the background and of course the electric guitar of Brian May make the song my all time preferred track.
7. What sort of sound can we expect from your forthcoming single ?
The style of my music is very varied. I try to make the music that I like, that’s why I make music in different styles, because I like many kinds of music, so some songs are very much Pop-rock, others are more electronica, others more rock and others more psychedelic. It is a bit uncommon the mix of music that I have brought together in this album but I am confident that it all suits perfectly. If one song reminds you about something sad, another one will cheer you up immediately.
8. What are your ambitions for your music. Where do you see yourself in 5
years ?
I see my self touring around Europe, The whole Common Wealth, U.S.A. and Latin-America for many years, getting airplay in many radio stations in the whole world. Releasing records through a good disc company and making a living out of my music.
9. How would you describe your music and what genre do you think it fits
into ?
My music has many faces, many styles in one album, so I can not find a word that would describe the style but there is a bit of acoustic, Pop-rock, Rock, Electronica and Dance in it.
10. Where was your new album recorded and who was producing ?
The most of the songs were recorded at my own home studio in The Hague – Holland just one of the songs was originally recorded in Mérida – Venezuela in the home studio of Rafael López
Garnica. The Whole album was mixed and mastered in Barcelona – Spain by Rafael López Ganica at LaBicha. Everything was produced by Eduardo J. Osorio (I-MIND)
11. What's the music scene like in Holland? In your opinion, do you think it
makes it easier or harder to make it as an artist coming from over there?
The music market in Holland is a bit smaller than in the U.K. or U.S.A., there is a big demand in Dutch music and there is also some room for English music. So basically I think there is a lot of chance here to sell music, only there is a lot of competition therefore artists like me need somebody to put the music in the right hands, media, radio, TV, etc. to reach the public effectively.
12. Who are the members of IMIND and what do they or you play ?
I-MIND is basically one man’s band: Eduardo J. Osorio. I compose everything and play everything in the album (Lead guitar, acoustic guitar, bass and drums) except for few parts of three songs (‘Solitary’), where some friends played for example lead guitar César
Vielma, Bass César Sosa and drums Hernan López and in the other two (’Area 51’ and ‘Kamasutra Plan’) where Patrick Jensen played the keyboards. I guess they were also a part of I-MIND at least temporarily.
13. In the U.K music and food has combined with celebrity rock and pop stars
now appearing and cooking on TV food shows. Is it like this in Holland ? Please can you give us your favourite Dutch recipe ? Dankie.
Yes, we have a program called “Life and Cooking” on Sunday from 17:00 till 19:00 in ‘RTL 5’ or something like that where artists perform while somebody cooks but the artists don’t cook them selves, they just talk about different subjects.
Ahh by the way my favorite dutch recipe is: “ERWTENSOEP”.
