Ohio's
melodic noisy pop heroes Dutch Rub pictured above
The
wonderful, loveable, witty, tuneful suit wearing USA band DUTCH RUB
appear next with the lovely Indie gem " Susan's Song". This
excellent rock n 'roll stomper starts off with a screeching chugging intro that
descends into jangly, melodic and beautiful guitars that are joined by the
heart wrenchingly lovely vocals. There is one main word that defines this band
and that is MELODIC. Yeah these guys know how to write a great tune and deliver
it in a Weezer-esq lo-fi Indie rock manner that shines with talent. Any self
respecting Indie loving student should be playing air guitar on their beds with
a tennis racquet to this song. The band come from Ohio in the States and are on
a mission to take over the world with their delicious, cleverly crafted melodic
pop songs that make you feel all warm and gooey while still holding a rock
punch. ( If you know what we mean -ed ). The lyrics are great also " She
says the band will make it in the end waaaa" sing the Rub. THEY
WILL , SUSAN IS RIGHT. The band consists of: Ricky French ( Bass and
vocals ), Rhett Crabtree ( Drums and piano ) and Patrick P Lewis (
Guitar and Vocals ). Dutch Rub are simply brilliant and will go on to become one
of the best underground American rock exports of our time proving that good
songs, wit and heavenly jazzy Indie rock melodies win in the end. Stunning and
worthy of extreme praise.
The
Future of British music REHAB above
REHAB
are one of the best British bands ever and they prove it on the wonderful "Silent
Room". Forget Oasis, Shed 7, Embrace, Travis etc etc.....Rehab are
here. "Silent Room" is a beautiful Indie ballad that sends shivers
down the spine and makes you feel all sentimental and warm. Yes it's
true, this top 4 piece are experts of modern melodic anthems that touch
the soul . They only formed at the beginning of this year and have achieved so
much so far. From the lovely piano intro, weeping strings and the massive and
touching vocals of Steve Reid, this record is an Indie gem that should
not be ignored. The full line up consists of: Steve Reid (
guitar/vocals), Dave Loach (Bass/guitar/vocals), Alex Hogg (
drums ) and Terry Hale ( Keyboards). Rehab are as British as fish
and chips and deliver a truly stunning melodic masterpiece that shines out in a
world of crap pop. They recently appeared at a festival in Switzerland, went on
Swiss TV and generated some top press. They have also been played on London's XFM and
were recently guests on the famous Radio 1 evening session. They were
also reviewed on the Radio 1 website "
a rich musical tapestry of analogue sounds" and have been played by
Radio 1's Colin Murray. All this in 12 small months. The future
is so bright they better wear shades. ( Get on with it - ed ) . Expect glorious
British harmonies, dreamy piano licks, sentimental lead guitar solo's and lots more.
This is pure epic Indie pop genius. Wonderful - it's REHAB. Beautiful
- Logo Magazine. Will be signed , but enjoy them while they are still new,
fresh and totally Indie. Check
out their site.
America's
top songwriter JOE PRESTI above in action
The
talented and enigmatic JOE PRESTI from Austin, Texas appears next with
the stunning, sing-a-long and energetic 80's esq pop anthem " The Angel
Song". This excellent production starts off catchy and ends catchy.
Brooklyn born Joe captures the feeling of kitsh 80's electro and combines it
with a modern anthemic sound to create a truly excellent leftfield pop song .
The high pitch strings are wonderful and remind us of early Pet Shop Boys/Depeche
Mode crossed with Carter the unstoppable sex machine. Great. Expect electro
beats, distorted weeping lead guitars, dreamy synth riffs, melodic and catchy
vocals and that wonderful sing-a-long chorus. This really is an excellent piece
of modern leftfield witty pop genius. " Please don't get in my way,
because im gonna knock you down with my daydream Gaze, I said my eyes are wide
open and my mind is clear, I said nothing's gonna keep me down , cos I'm
just getting started" sings Joe with confidence and swagger. Joe also
plays with a few other bands including Stevie Ray Vaughan's Double Trouble. We
love this it's the first top electro pop anthem of the 00's. Excellent. Check
his site out.
Basingstoke's
pop genius TREVOR JOHN ( above ) appears next with the poptastic gem " I
went to school with Elizabeth Hurley" ( Yes he did it's true - ed ).
This excellent production features everything from kitsch sizzling synths,
chunky electric guitar stabs, cascading reverb drenched trumpets and pumping
bass riffs. This is like "Fame" meets Tenpole Tudor and The Pale
Fountains dancing the night away with Pulp. Everything on this record shines
from the strong and tuneful vocals/harmonies to the sentimental lead guitars
and very danceable crashing drums. The enigmatic Trevor John has the knack of
delivering perfect proper pop. He proved this with his previous Matchbox
release " Hollyana". The song is still riding high on the matchbox
chart after over 6 months on the playlist. "Elizabeth Hurley" is
a wonderful shiny 80's esq pop track that comes with a slice of tongue in
cheek humour, tons of wit, charm and charisma. It sticks in your memory
often looping in your head after too many pints in your local pub. You then
want to get the record and play it very loud to your neighbours claming that
you indeed know someone who went to school with Elizabeth Hurley ( Hi Hugh ). I
think what were trying to say is that this record is very catchy, funny, warm,
fun and absolutely irresistible in parts. " There is no kiss in this
fairytale" sings Trevor after the wonderful guitar/trumpet
instrumental in the middle. To us this is perfect sparkly leftfield pop.
Basingstoke has not known a finer pop maverick.
Top
programmer, songwriter and electro genius Douglas Wiggins from STILL
AUTOMATION above
Appearing
next for the 4th time on a Matchbox release we have the one and only eccentric
pop genius STILL AUTOMATION a.k.a Mr Douglas Wiggins. He licenses
the dreamy, dark , mysterious electro fuelled track" Massumo".
The guitars on this song are dark and ominous ala manics Holy Bible era and
they are joined swiftly by smooth, dreamy and melodic vocals. The vocals are
very distinctive and can only be recognized as Douglas Wiggins. He has his own
unique voice, unique sound and music and releases it through his own label and
his favourite label, Matchbox. Sit on that the corporate music industry.
Good unique music doesn't need you anymore. Still Auto do definitely have an
80's influenced sound that can be described as eccentric dream pop. This one
reminds us of Fad Gadget on a school trip with the Pet Shop Boys and Kissing
the Pink. Expect risjng sirens, crashing electro drums, robotic vocals and dark
sexual undertones. " Pleasure Me" sings Douglas while the
synths grow funky and dark. Douglas Wiggins has brought out many albums on his
own and should be respected for his Indie philosophy on the music business and
his brilliant programming and production talents. Excellent. Unique. The way it
should be . Check out http://www.tyrantmusic.20megsfree.com/
The

Excellent
new five piece Wolverhampton band THE SUNKINGS burst on the scene next
with the fantastic " How does Everything Do ?". This great
Indie rock masterpiece bops all the way through with pounding drums, sonic
screeching guitars and a general warm feeling. The vocals are excellent and are
delivered with precision and melodic excellence ie: catchy as hell. This is
like the Foo Fighters in the ring with The Lemonheads, Sugar and Feeder but it
also has it's own unique, strong modern feel and sound. The guitars riff and
chime, the drums crash and the wonderful sing a long harmonies stick in your
head. " I don't want it to hurt no more, so we must push it out of the
door" sings lead singer Jon Dunnett with emotion. The band is made up

Peck ( Guitar), Dil Hughes ( Bass ) and Andy Gibney on Drums.

Calm
down girls it's LA REFUSENIKS
The
powerful LA REFUSENIKS ( above on a streaking trip ) appear next with the excellent lo-fi leftfield
Indie rock anthem" US College Radio". This great Surrey band
combine punk, lo-fi and garage rock with irresistible melodies that are very
catchy and chaotic at the same time. The band consists of: Matt
Illicit ( Vocals ), Francois Supastar ( Guitar, bass, keys ), Johnny
Zero ( guitar , bass , keys ) and Alex Coalman on drums. This song
goes from witty Weezer-esq style melodic beauty to Nirvana-esq guitar mayhem
and back again. Expect high pitch sing-a-long backing vocals, screeching
pumpkins -esq guitars, inspirational drums and loads of witty pop sensibility.
There are a lot of good influences here that meet up to create a unique scream-
a -long tongue in cheek anthem for the underground ( shut up Girls Aloud fans
go to bed it's after 8 p.m.). The Niks recently played a whole UK tour with
80's Indie gods Half Man Half Biscuit. Excellent. The band have also played
live at Camdens famous Feet First . La Refuseniks are not your average
band but a unique rock experience backed up with tons of pop values. You could
call this garage punk mayhem from a bunch of eccentric genius's. Expect
loads of manic screaming at the end. This is bound to create an UPROAR. Watch
out for this lot live they will blow you away. Alright.
Up next
hot new 4 piece THE INVENTION (

tuneful band hail from Manchester and London and know how to deliver groovy,

vocals, catchy melodies, mammoth drums and an overall big production. The full
line up is : Anthony Slattery ( vocals/guitar ), Danny Williams (
Lead Guitar ), David Cutler ( Bass ) and Rob Stevens on drums.
This top Indie track grooves all the way through in a warm but dark rock
manner. The vocals are delivered with passion and emotion and build up to the
huge chorus that sticks in your head. " Noone refuses any of your
excuses, dishing out your bruises, always feeling useless" sings
Anthony Slattery over melodic, dreamy guitars that burst into distortion and
burst out of the speakers over some wonderful echoey "La la la la's".
Dark sophisticated Indie rock at it's best.
