RELEASE DATE 9 FEBRUARY 2004 - CATALOGUE NO MR054
Opening our first release of 2004 we have
the very hotly tipped Irish band THE GURRIERS. This extremely powerful,
unique, witty and very infectious punk rock band hail from Dunkark and license
the very mammoth and epic underground monster " Kids on The
Street". Starting off with chugging guitars and charismatic glammy
vocals this track pleases from the start building slowly into a huge stadium
sized chorus. The drums, bass and guitars crash out of the speakers under the
very strong and rebellious vocals . " I know im' a misunderstood
individual" screams lead singer Declan. He tells the story a
story of being a so called outcast and being laughed at by narrow minded
students on the way to school. Well who's cool as f..k now. The Gurriers
are not just your average sound the same punk band. They have thought about
their lyrics and their sound is more classic than alternative with mammoth
sing-a-long chorus's. The band is made up of Declan Lawless (Guitar+vocals),
Alan Markey (Bass+vocals) and Colin Berrill (Drums). The band have already won
a place at The Heineken Demo Marathon and appeared on the television show
" Echo". " Kids on The
Street" is packed with wit, strong melody and lovely noisy
guitars. Brilliant. Check out http://www.thegurriers.com/

THE MAGNIFICENT GURRIERS
ABOVE
Blasting into orbit next we have the
wonderful and chaotic THIS ETAL. This inventive atmospheric leftfield noise pop
band license the very infectious song " Police Officer".
Bradford based This Etal are mysterious, atmospheric, dark, energetic and
melodic all at the same time. They combine powerful screeching but melancholic
guitars with a busy and unique rhythm section ala early Ants, Joy Division,
Seafood and Queens of the Stone Age. Those are just vague comparisons because
we think they hold a truly unique identity and sound. Simply, they produce an
outstanding noise worthy of praise. The vocals courtesy of Neil Widdop
ooze from the speakers with a warm melodic expertise that reminds us of a young
punkier Morrissey . The vocals rise to a falsetto high that has not been heard
since New Order's "Everything's Gone Green". True English alternative
music at it's best from a band that still know the meaning of the word ART.
Yes , This Etal are actually producing art in this age of terrible karaoke pop
stars. They have been approached by many record labels from Polydor to
4AD........BUT we think that even if they were never signed they would still
carry on regardless producing class A alternative music until the masses
dropped their knickers and listened. That proves they are true artists. ( Get
on with it - ed ). Anyway we're not the only ones who like them: "Melodic
yet Chaotic" - Neon Promotions, "Brooding, melancholic -
Indigo Planet Sound, Big Art rock - Leeds Music Scene.
They will soon be releasing their stunning E.P " Everything's
irrelevant and no idea's original" through matchbox so watch this
space. Go
and see their website now. This Etal are
pictured in the studio below.

Following in style
are a band that need no introduction but we will anyway. THE DROWN are
from the USA somewhere near Philadelphia. They started their career by
licensing the now cult classic " Vile Bodies" to our "Blast
Off" compilation at the beginning of 2003. This was their first ever
release. Since then they have stormed
the Matchbox Radio 24 charts staying at NO 1 for weeks, featured
in Magnet Magazine on a regular basis, released their debut album "The
Drown" through Matchbox and received
rave reviews in Gothic Beauty magazine.
They also grabbed 3 top positions in last years Matchbox listeners poll for
Best Song, best Band and Best Darkwave. The Drown fronted by the enigmatic, mysterious true Indie cult pop star WILLIAM
BYRON are
now on the verge of releasing their second album " Mars Import". They
license the hot new track " Platinum" to Entrance . Platinum
takes The Drown on a completely different trip . This very sexy and atmospheric
song starts off with spacey pads and radio sound effects that draw the listener
close to the edge of their speakers. That lovely muted guitar riff then enters
with a sexy beat and groovy bassline that sets the scene for this futuristic
dark sexy pop track. William Byron's vocals are distinctive and
instantly recognisable.
They ooze from this record with a sophistication not heard since early Bowie
and Pete Murphy. The drumbeat goes from a 70's esq sound with built in
handclaps to a futuristic electro stomp that leads to a howling from
William not heard since" American werewolf in London". It literally sends
shivers down your spine. This record then fades into the distance leaving you
wanting more and more and more and more and ( calm down - ed ). Platinum is
different. It is not your conventional verse chorus verse song. It is unique
and made out of a love for art in it's pure form That's the second time we have
mentioned art on
this album page. There is hope for the music industry.......it's right here.
The Drown will never fade away. Enter their world by clicking the
album cover below.

Appearing next we have the dreamy
Indie pioneers SWAY from Finland. This classy 3 piece license the lovely
melodic indie rock gem " Circles". The vocals courtesy
of Finland's Indie hero Kimmo Paananen are very distinctive and melodic
in a sort of Wannadies, Suede-ish sort of way. The music is melancholy,
epic and very dreamy but also full of rock energy and other worldly power. SWAY
were formed in January 2002 and deliver sensitive but dramatic Indie rock in a
mature, mellow and emotional manner. They write Finnish Indie torch songs that
touch the soul in a spine-chilling manner. The press have praised them already:
"Highly emotional stuff" - Rockmusica, "Class/Beautiful"
- Jyväskylä University Students Newspaper. They were also recently demo
of the week on YleX the Finnish rock-oriented national radio
channel. Excellent and different leftfield rock pop with it's own flavour.

Devon's brilliant JON SMITH in transcendental
mode above
The wonderful, zany, witty and
musical genius JON SMITH from the land of Devon appears next with the
wonderful " She'll never Love Again". Jon Smith
combines Beatles-esq harmonies, Spanish themed acoustic guitars, melodic vocals
and tremendous backing vocals with a Syd Barret-esq pop writing sensibility. He
has created a perfect and eccentric pop song of true value. From start to
finish this song shows true musical genius including maracas, delicious ooh's
and aah's, 60's esq Ba Pa Pa's and glorious trumpets. Proper music is
back. " let yourself go and discover the world it's a lovelier place if
you do, Let yourself in for a couple of drinks, let yourself in for a few".....we
love you Jon. Jon started playing guitar when he was 16 years old and began
doing local gigs singing Cat Stevens, Jethro Tull, Nick Drake and Brian Wilson
songs. Then he discovered his own talent and the rest will be history. He also
plays flute in a band called " Under Suspicion" and has produced
his own album called "Thinking Out Loud " from which this top
track "She'll Never Love Again" is taken. Jon also has
his own studio where he engineered the whole album proving it's best doing it
the Indie way. He has captured the lovely melodies that fly around in his head
and sealed them forever on disc the way he wanted them. Like Frank he has done
it his way and we are thankful. He describes his music as "contemporary
English folk with an American West-coast feel". Brilliant, real and very
loveable. Look out for a release soon of his album " Thinking out
Loud" through Matchbox.
BORN IN STATION are Joe
Ings ( Vox, Guitars, Keys, Bass, programming ) and Amy McGill (
Guitars, Vocals, Bass, Keys, programming ). They license the dreamy and
extremely melodic " Flowers and Traffic Cones" to
Entrance. This very atmospheric tune boasts a classy production, lovely
acoustic guitars and dreamy melodic vocals from Joe Ings. This class duo
from Exeter combine heavenly melodies with a Radiohead-esq soundtrack to create
a moody, melancholic song that sticks in your head and soothes the soul. There
are some lovely, epic and heavenly sounding keyboards on this record that
combined with the inventive and slightly lo-fi funky guitar riffs turn this
song into a class modern age lo-fi pop song. BORN IN STATION are
influenced by Aimee mann, Massive Attack, Sparkehorse and The Beatles and describe
their music as a combination of pop/rock and dance. Inventive, surreal and
other worldly Indie pop at it's best.
