THE
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
1. What made you decide to
do an album of punk covers ? Tell us about the history of Covered with punk
?
I always loved punk music and started a
band up at school called Split Personality. We never had the money or
inclination to take it any further so it all ended when we left school.
After a short break of about 25 years my wife bought me some studio time for
a Xmas present so that I could fulfil a dream to record some stuff. Meeting
up with Jeremy drew from Yellow Shark and the producer Matt Butler a band
was put together with myself on vocals and three session players Tom,
Steve and Mick. I had five songs that I fancied doing and a week later I
came away with a CD with 5 songs on it. The experience was fantastic and the
feedback I was getting for the music spurred me on to continue with the view
of getting an album out.
A switch of studios
saw two visits to the famous Rockfield studios in Monmouth and seven months
later the album was finished with 15 tracks some straight covers , some
unusual twists on originals and a few of my own work. The finished product
was well received by record companies and I decided to run with Matchbox to
release it.
2. Who or what are your influences ?
Sex pistols,
Toy dolls, Stiff little fingers, Clash
3. Name your all time favourite punk
band/song ?
Sex pistols - Bodies
4. What modern artists do you like ?
Green Day, Blink 182, My Chemical
Romance
5. Tell us who else is playing what on the
album ?
There were
three constants on the album with myself on vocals, Tom Hooper on the
drums and Steve Amadeo on bass. Three guitarists were used on the album
which were Mick Mewitt, Tom Dodd and Ian Morgan.
6. What is your favourite punk lyric/slogan
of all time ?
Never mind the bollocks
here’s the sex pistols
7. What sort of sound can we expect from your
forthcoming single ? You have decided to release a cool new punk version of
the Plain White T's classic song " Hey There Delilah". What was the reason
for this are you big fans ?
A bit of a mixed bag with a few full
on foot tapping tracks to a few unusual twists on originals, hopefully there
is something for everybody on it. The "Hey there Delilah"
track was such a massive success by the Plain White T’s and I wanted to add
a bit more life to it. I think we’ve managed to do that while still
keeping the lyrics of the original prominent to tell the story.
8.
What are your ambitions for your music. Where do you see yourself in 5 years
?
I’d love the album to be well
received and for it to be a start of more projects in the future. There's
plenty of material out there to have a punk twist on it so I guess that
would be my ambition.
9. Where was your new album
recorded and who was producing ?
The album was
recorded in three takes once at yellow shark and twice at Rockfield. (
wow that's were Queen recorded Bohemian Rhapsody and The Undertones recorded
Teenage Kicks.- Ed ). I was fortunate to have had Matt Butler producing it
who has worked with many successful artists.
10.
In the U.K music and food has combined with celebrity rock and pop stars now
appearing and cooking on TV food shows. Please can you give us your
favourite recipe tell us what your fave meal is ?
Usually something
simple like a good fillet steak with roasted new potatoes in olive oil and
salt, fresh veg and a good bottle of red wine. ( mmmmmm nice I think I'll be
joining you for that - Ed )
11.
We think your sound is influenced more from the original and best school of
punk ie: Late 70's/early 80's British punk. But what do you make of all the
USA punk bands like Blink 182, Green Day etc.
I don’t tend to worry about where the
band comes from , If I like the music and it makes me want to turn it up
louder and play it again then that’s good enough for me , basket case by
green day is a good example.
